Living Beyond Good Intentions: The Journey from Desire to Transformation
The world we live in today feels increasingly chaotic. Turn on the news, scroll through social media, or simply observe the culture around us, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the darkness. Yet amid this turmoil, there's an ancient truth that remains steadfast: God is still in control, and His promises never fail.
When the World Feels Out of Control
We live in a time remarkably similar to the days of Noah—a period so wicked that divine intervention became necessary. The comparison isn't meant to discourage us but to remind us that God has always had a plan, even when evil seems to prevail. The devil operates in this world, orchestrating chaos and then cunningly allowing people to blame God for the destruction he himself causes.
It's a brilliant deception, isn't it? The enemy wreaks havoc, and then people turn away from the very One who can save them, questioning why a loving God would allow such suffering. But understanding spiritual warfare changes everything. When we recognize that one-third of the heavenly host fell with Satan, we begin to understand why similar patterns of deception appear across cultures and throughout history.
The Blessed Hope That Anchors Us
Despite the darkness, we have a blessed hope: Jesus is coming back. And when He returns, it won't be as the suffering servant hanging on a cross. He's coming back with eyes like flames of fire, a chest burning like a furnace, and a two-edged sword proceeding from His mouth. He's coming to establish His kingdom once and for all.
The signs are everywhere. Ancient prophecies from Ezekiel 38 are playing out on the evening news. Nations are aligning exactly as Scripture predicted. The Strait of Hormuz could become the gathering place for the armies of the world. It's not coincidence—it's divine orchestration.
This reality should ignite urgency in our hearts. People need to hear about Jesus. Even those we might consider enemies deserve the opportunity to escape eternal separation from God. The time is short, and the stakes are eternal.
The Danger of Earthly Distractions
The story of Balaam from Numbers 23 provides a sobering warning for modern believers. Here was a prophet who knew God, heard from God, and even experienced miraculous intervention—his donkey spoke to him!—yet he remained blinded by his desire for earthly wealth and possessions.
When Balak came offering riches in exchange for cursing Israel, Balaam couldn't shake his attraction to material gain. Even after God clearly said no, Balaam kept asking, hoping for a different answer. He was so consumed with what he could acquire that when his donkey literally spoke to him, he didn't even pause to marvel at the miracle. He just answered the animal as if talking donkeys were an everyday occurrence.
This is the peril of misplaced priorities. When earthly possessions, status, or comfort become our focus, we can miss the miraculous work of God happening right in front of us. We can hear God's voice and still choose our own path. We can experience His presence and still chase after things that will burn up when this world passes away.
The Trap of Covetousness
Covetousness isn't always about expensive things. It's about wanting what isn't ours or allowing anything to take the place that belongs to God alone. It could be a hobby that consistently keeps us from worship. It could be someone else's life that we envy. It could be the relentless pursuit of the next upgrade, the bigger house, the better car.
The truth is, most people can't tell the difference between a five-dollar ring and a fifteen-thousand-dollar one. So why do we sacrifice so much—including our spiritual health—for things that ultimately don't matter? Why do we let the temporary overshadow the eternal?
God sometimes withholds certain things from us not because He's withholding good gifts, but because He knows those things would make us self-sufficient. They would cause us to forget our dependence on Him. They would lead us away from the path He has for us.
From Intentions to Transformation
Many of us set out each day with good intentions. We wake up determined never to sin again, to be better, to walk more closely with God. Then someone says something that triggers us, or we face a familiar temptation, and we stumble.
Good intentions are a starting point, but they're not enough. The journey from wanting to change to actually being transformed requires more than wishful thinking.
First, our intentions must become desires—deep, burning desires that won't be satisfied with surface-level changes. Then those desires must develop into discipline. We must create habits of holiness, patterns of obedience that become second nature.
Finally, conviction must transform into surrender. James 1:22 reminds us clearly: "Don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you're just fooling yourself."
How much plainer could it be? Transformation happens when we lay everything at the feet of Jesus—our plans, our desires, our possessions, our very lives. It's in that place of surrender that God can truly work in us.
The Daily Pursuit of Better
Every single day presents an opportunity to be better than we were yesterday. Not through our own strength, but by waking up and declaring, "Not today, devil. I'm going to walk differently today. I'm going to let God transform me today."
This isn't about achieving perfection—that's impossible in our fallen state. It's about pursuing progress. It's about recognizing when we've fallen short and immediately running to the One who offers forgiveness and restoration.
We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, who is constantly making intercession for us. When we stumble, we don't have a license to sin, but we do have a Savior who stands ready to cleanse us and set us back on the right path.
The Marriage Supper Awaits
Our loved ones who have gone before us aren't off having tea parties in heaven. They're at the throne of God, making intercession for us, waiting for the resurrection when we'll all be reunited. They're waiting for the marriage supper of the Lamb—the ultimate celebration when the devil is defeated, death is conquered, and we're all together in God's presence forever.
That's our blessed hope. That's what we're living for. Not the things of this world that will pass away, but the eternal kingdom where streets are paved with gold and we'll enjoy what our minds cannot even conceive—the things God has prepared for those who love Him.
Choose This Day
The question each of us must answer is simple but profound: Are we Balaam, so distracted by earthly desires that we miss the miraculous? Or are we surrendered servants, daily laying down our lives and allowing God to transform us from glory to glory?
The world is watching. Jesus is coming soon. Let's be found faithful, walking in obedience, and sharing the hope we have with everyone who needs to hear it.
